The $65 million Bruce Gordon Centre at the University of Wollongong’s Innovation Campus brings the St George Illawarra Dragons’ NRL, NRLW, pathways and community programs together under one roof for the first time.

In a high-performance facility, air quality and thermal comfort directly influence recovery, focus and output, making the envelope a performance consideration rather than just an architectural one. Populous specified 18 motorised SJ Espacer louvre windows across the training and workout zone, delivering controllable natural ventilation across a large-format glazed facade.

The 235mm glass blades open to 70 degrees, drawing fresh air deep into the space while holding the clean sightlines the architecture calls for. Glazed with 9.76mm Crystal Grey Hush Laminate, the windows balance daylight and visual connection to the campus with acoustic control, an important factor in a high-traffic, high-energy environment. The grey tint also moderates glare and solar gain across the large-format elevation, supporting visual comfort on the training floor. Connected to the building’s BMS for smart, integrated control, the louvres allow the centre to run mixed-mode – fresh air when conditions allow, fully sealed when active conditioning is required.

Rather than sitting as separate openings within the wall, the SJ Espacer units glaze into the same framing grid as the surrounding fixed lights, so the operable louvres read as part of the glazing line, delivering high free-air openings with minimal visual penetration of the elevation. Prefabricated and locally manufactured, the system was coordinated directly with the curtain wall and build program and is made from Hydro CIRCAL 75R recycled aluminium as standard, at no more than 1.9kg of CO₂ per kilogram against a global average of 16.7kg.

“Natural ventilation was a key design objective for the Dragons’ new high-performance gym. Safetyline Jalousie’s SJ Espacer louvre system played an integral role in creating a responsive mixed-mode environment, introducing fresh air deep into the building to support passive cooling while allowing the facility to operate as a fully sealed environment when active conditioning is required,” says Hollis Browne, Senior Associate & Designer at Populous.

“The system’s architectural integration allowed us to maximise our environmental performance, security, and design expression to deliver a more sustainable, high-performing facility for the club.”
