Understanding Green Star

Green Star is Australia’s national sustainability rating system for buildings, fitouts, and communities. Created by the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA), Green Star has been widely adopted across the country for more than two decades.

It assesses how well a project performs across key areas including:

Green Star aims to minimise the environmental impact of the built environment while creating healthy and efficient spaces for people. Whether it’s a school, commercial office, or healthcare facility, Green Star promotes outcomes that benefit both the environment and the community.

Where Green Star is expected or required

In several Australian states and territories, Green Star certification is no longer optional; it’s embedded in local planning rules and government procurement policies:

Region | Requirement

ACT | Government buildings must meet at least a 5 Star rating.

NSW (City of Sydney) | Large commercial projects over 5,000sqm require Green Star certification.

VIC (Melbourne) | Certain precincts mandate 5 Star-equivalent sustainability performance.

QLD, SA, WA | Government buildings often require 4 or 5 Star ratings as a minimum.

Even where it’s not strictly mandatory, more developers and designers are choosing to pursue Green Star voluntarily, driven by growing expectations around ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) responsibility.

Green Star and the role of materials

Green Star doesn’t just look at energy and water use – it also considers the impact of the products and materials used throughout a project. This includes:

What is Global GreenTag, and why does it matter?

Global GreenTag is one of the world’s most respected sustainability certification systems for building products. It independently verifies the health, safety, and environmental performance of products across their entire lifecycle.

Importantly, GreenTag-certified products are recognised by the Green Building Council of Australia — meaning they directly support achieving Green Star credits under categories such as:

Responsible finishes
Healthy materials
Low carbon products

How Green Star certification works (simplified)

The Green Star process involves a few key stages:

Register the project: Submit your project to the Green Building Council.
Prepare evidence: Gather documentation showing how your project meets the criteria.
Assessment: Submit documents for independent review.
Rating awarded: Projects receive a star rating between 1 and 6 based on performance.
Promotion and maintenance: Display your Green Star certification and work to maintain or improve performance over time.

From 2023 onwards, any project aiming for 5 Stars or above must be climate positive – powered by renewables, fossil fuel-free, and designed for low carbon impact.
