The $40-million Normanton Hospital Redevelopment, delivered under the Queensland Government’s Building Rural and Remote Health Program, was designed to overcome the challenges of distance, workforce shortages, and unpredictable weather through a prefabricated modular construction approach. Moddex was engaged by Hutchinson Builders to supply compliant handrails and balustrades across stairs, ramps, and platforms throughout Wings A and B of the hospital.

The challenge

Constructing a major healthcare facility in one of Queensland’s most remote regions meant limited access to skilled labour, requiring a solution that reduced onsite work while being able to work around unpredictable weather patterns. The modular approach demanded precision-fit systems capable of integrating seamlessly with prefabricated units, while strict safety and accessibility standards called for durable, low-maintenance barriers built for long-term performance.

Moddex solution

Moddex supplied over 300 lineal metres of pre-engineered, top mounted AR10 Assistrail® handrails as well as CB40 and CB45 Conectabal® commercial balustrade systems, tailored to suit the project’s modular design. Each section was manufactured and quality checked offsite, then delivered in kit form for rapid assembly with no onsite welding or cutting. Installed across six stairways, four ramps and multiple deck platforms, all products were HDG finished, suited to North Queensland’s humid climate. By using prefabricated systems, the project team minimised time onsite and streamlined installation, contributing to the successful completion within six months.
