What is it that really makes a space different? Some would say functionality, others style, and still others comfort. But in the case of this kitchen in North Queensland, Australia, designed by Studio K Interior Design, the real story is in the balance of materials and tones that have created a space where the experience of cooking and sharing blurs the boundaries between indoors and outdoors.

This project is a perfect example of how good design enhances a space by creating a harmony between aesthetics and functionality, adapting organically to its surroundings. Called Ombra, this space aims to be a haven, a place that, according to its designer, “should feel cool but warm in spirit, with elements of light and shade to reflect the movement of the shadows cast by the trees throughout the day”.

Dekton as a partner

The focal point of the kitchen is a stunning central island, which stands out for its curved design, achieved thanks to detailed craftsmanship. The island is made from 8mm and 20mm thick Dekton slabs, which were cut 40mm wide to achieve the desired radius of curvature. “The work of the stonemasons in matching the grain of each slab to the slabs placed next to it is evidence of real expertise,” says the designer. This level of precision makes the island the ‘hero’ of the kitchen, a versatile space that serves as much for cooking and eating on informal occasions as it does for displaying lavish appetiser boards at gatherings.

The choice of the ultra-compact Dekton surface as a material was logical for a hot and humid tropical environment such as North Queensland, which required durable surfaces capable of withstanding extreme conditions. “The transition between the pantry, the indoor kitchen and the outdoor area had to be visually seamless, and the materials and finishes used had to be highly durable,” says the designer. Dekton not only meets these requirements, but it also offers “a touch of sophistication and modernity” that enhances the kitchen’s aesthetic.

Inside and out in a very organic way

In the Ombra project, the indoor kitchen is separated from the outdoor area by a large sliding glass door. When opened, the two spaces become one, with a small, barely perceptible separation between the two of them. The two kitchens have worktops at the same height, and the use of Dekton Laurent for both worktops allows for a seamless transition with no visual interruptions. “Considering the environmental factors to which the outdoor kitchen is exposed (UV rays, heat and humidity), Dekton was the perfect solution for it, and it also offers the ideal balance between functionality and aesthetics in the indoor kitchen,” says the designer.

Ombra means ‘shadow’ in Italian, and was inspired by the idea of creating a sanctuary that conveys the serenity of its natural surroundings. The aim was to create “a home that works with its surroundings, with a modern and contemporary style”. Dekton Laurent, a colour with a matt finish and refined texture, was chosen for its ‘strength’ and ‘dramatic character’, giving the space a serene elegance that perfectly complements the natural wood floor.

In addition to being visually stunning, Dekton stands out for its functionality. The material was used for both the worktop and splashback, creating a seamless surface that is easy to clean and can withstand heavy use. This choice allows owners to place hot dishes directly on the surface and enjoy minimal maintenance over time, with the peace of mind that their kitchen will look spotless for years to come.
