A custom Designer Jet carpet from GH Commercial was part of an artistic installation created by large-scale artist Rone at the Geelong Gallery.

The Geelong-born artist, who spent two decades building an exceptional reputation for large-scale wall paintings and immersive installations, returned home to completely transform a room at the gallery as part of a full feature exhibition.

The exhibition at Geelong Gallery, which ran from 27th February to 16th May 2021, paid homage to the architecture and history of the building and the historic art collection within. The exhibition provided an overview of Rone’s stellar career, examining his early stencil works and street art through to photographs documenting his major installations that have transformed abandoned spaces.

GH Commercial proudly partnered with Rone and the Geelong Gallery to bring the ‘RONE in Geelong’ exhibition to life. Exploring the relationship between beauty and decay, and light and dark, Rone worked with GH’s locally based textile design team to create a custom Designer Jet carpet with built-in Quick Comfort cushion backing.

The design process began with the GH team sharing designs from their library and building concept ideas, which enabled Rone to further conceptualise the artwork he envisioned for the space.

Wanting to experience his custom carpet design coming to life, Rone came down to GH’s Geelong factory to watch the Designer Jet machine in action, printing the carpet for the exhibition. Rone was truly mesmerised by the detail captured on the carpet, as well as the overall lushness and texture; the carpet delivered an impressive performance too with the exhibition drawing over 46,000 visitors in 11 weeks.

When walking through the exhibition, Rone wanted to transport visitors to another place; the carpet played an important role in achieving this due to the large footprint it had in the Geelong Gallery. The beauty of the carpet design itself, plus the softness and warmth it brought to the space, allowed people to feel immersed in the exhibition.
