Sophie Canaris, a rising star in the field of sustainable architecture, was recently named the 2024 Emerging Sustainable Architect/Designer, a prestigious accolade that highlights her exceptional talent and commitment to environmental and community-focused design.

Canaris’s work is celebrated for its innovative approach to adaptive reuse, seamlessly integrating the old with the new while addressing pressing ecological challenges. Her recent projects include transforming heritage buildings into energy-efficient, multi-use spaces that serve as cultural and social hubs. With a keen eye for detail and an unwavering dedication to community engagement, she has redefined the role of architecture as a tool for fostering connection and resilience.

A medal-winning graduate of Sydney University, Canaris has already made waves internationally, with projects in Sydney, regional New South Wales, the UK, and Croatia.

Her passion for sustainability extends beyond design, as she actively mentors emerging architects and advocates for greener urban planning. Her win signals a shift towards thoughtful, community-centered design in the global architectural landscape.

Sophie Canaris is an architect is currently working as a Exhibitions Project Manager at the Powerhouse Museum. Sophie has worked in London and Sydney with a focus on sustainability, heritage, and adaptive re-use.

She graduated from Sydney University in 2015 and is her last role in an architectural practice was working at Dunn & Hillam Architects.

As an architect, Sophie Canaris has specialized in arts and community projects across Sydney, regional New South Wales, and London. Her work is deeply rooted in sustainability and adaptive reuse, reflecting a commitment to environmentally responsible design.

Beyond her project work, Sophie is actively involved in the architectural community through her roles on the Emerging Architects and Graduates Committee and the Built Environment Committee for the New South Wales chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects. These positions have allowed her to contribute to the profession’s development, particularly in fostering new talent and promoting sustainable practices in architecture.

She has also delivered several galleries and public projects that sensitively revitalise heritage buildings.

Her work on The Gunnery Transformation for example, earned a Highly Commended mention in the Architecture Category at the 2024 National Trust Heritage NSW Awards.

The Gunnery Transformation was a significant project, integrating the challenges of historical preservation, conservation, and protection with provocation, inspiration, and continual change.
