Woods Bagot Director Peter Miglis has been shortlisted for the Architecture and Design category of the Urban Leader Awards, one of eight finalists recognised for their contribution to design excellence in the built environment.

Organised by The Urban Developer and now in its third year, the Urban Leader Awards recognise the individuals behind Australia's cities, rather than the projects or companies they represent. This year, 160 leaders have been shortlisted across 18 categories, spanning developers, builders, architects, planners, engineers, financiers, marketers and government leaders. We assessed every submission against six weighted criteria: leadership, growth, innovation, responsibility, bravery and distinction.

Three decades of complex architectural practice

For 30 years, Miglis has designed and delivered complex architectural and urban projects that contribute to cities and communities across sectors, scales, typologies and borders. With more than 40 delivered projects to his name, his work has received national and international recognition for craft, progressiveness and advancement in sustainability.

His practice combines the disciplines of architectural tradition with a carefully calibrated approach to innovation, a balance that has defined a career spanning commercial, residential, education, sport and mixed-use work across Australia and internationally.

Adaptive reuse and urban regeneration

Miglis is known for his work in adaptive reuse and urban regeneration, with a portfolio that demonstrates how existing buildings and precincts can be reimagined to meet contemporary needs while retaining cultural significance and embedded history. The work reflects a commitment to the longevity of the built fabric and to the communities that inhabit it.

Beyond the design studio, Miglis has built a reputation for bringing the right people to a shared vision. His empathetic, people-centred approach has drawn recognition from clients and peers alike. Celebrated for his business acumen as much as his design sensibility, his legacy includes client relationships nurtured over decades. He has served on numerous juries and design panels, contributing to the architectural agenda and raising public awareness of the value of good design.

The Urban Developer notes that the awards program is designed to bring people of this calibre to the fore: "While the industry often recognises the buildings making up our cities, we rarely celebrate the stalwart individuals, policymakers and creative minds that produce them."

An award made to the individual

The Architecture and Design category recognises individuals or groups responsible for projects demonstrating excellence in the built environment. Fellow finalists include Dan Liddy and Andy Bell of bureau^proberts, Joe Adsett of Joe Adsett Architects, Kent Pinel of Spyre, Loren Thanyakittikul of Local: Residential, Nick Symonds of MAS Architecture Studio, Rafael Contreras and Monica Earl of Contreras Earl Architecture, and Sam Alawie of Zane Carter Architects.

"Every award is made to the person, not the project or the company," The Urban Developer states.

Winners will be announced at a black-tie gala at the Four Seasons Sydney on Thursday, 22 October.
