TRCB Director Fred Chaney has been appointed President of the Western Australian Chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects (AIA), recognising more than 30 years of contribution to architecture, urban design and sustainability in Western Australia.

Chaney's career spans practice in Melbourne, the United Kingdom and Perth, and includes leadership roles across some of the state's most significant cultural, civic and transport projects. He began his career in Melbourne, where he spent 12 years in practice including six as a Director of a national architectural practice, before three years in the United Kingdom and then more than 12 years in Perth. He previously served as founding principal of Chaney Architecture before joining TRCB, where he continues to lead work across masterplanning, transport, education, multi-residential and civic architecture.

His project experience includes master plans for the Art Gallery of Western Australia, the State Library of Western Australia and the Perth Cultural Centre, alongside the RASWA masterplan for the Perth Showgrounds and a Fremantle campus master plan for the University of Notre Dame. He served as Precincts Design Lead for the Morley and Noranda stations on the Morley-Ellenbrook train line, and as Project Director for the Katitjin Centre at the Australian Institute of Management, WA's first 6 Star Green Star As-Built project.

"I'm looking forward to working with the Chapter to champion professional excellence and know-how, and to support the next generation of architects helping to shape Western Australia's built environment."

As WA Chapter President, Chaney will sit on the AIA's National Council, representing the voice of members at a state level and contributing to the profession's advocacy and policy direction across Australia. The AIA represents more than 14,600 members nationally and has championed professional standards in the profession since 1929.

The appointment reflects a broader record of sector-wide governance. Chaney has served as a member of the Western Australian Planning Commission (2016–2021), as the first WA-based director on the board of the Green Building Council of Australia, and as Chair of the Australian Urban Design Research Centre (AUDRC) from 2013 to 2020. He currently serves as Deputy Chair of the City of Perth Design Review Panel and as a non-executive director of Forest & Wood Products Australia.

TRCB Director Eamon Broderick welcomed the appointment. "Fred's appointment is a strong reflection of the calibre of thinking within TRCB," says Broderick. "His ability to bring together design excellence, sustainability and community outcomes has shaped significant projects and places across Perth, and this role gives him a platform to extend that influence across the wider profession."
