The award recognises early-career architects or collaborations demonstrating outstanding contributions to design excellence, professional leadership, education, and community engagement, advancing architecture’s public role.

All Chapter winners will now progress to national judging, with the national recipient to be announced later this year.

Australian Capital Territory — Tynan Freeman, Stewart Architecture

Freeman was recognised for his strong design leadership, particularly in housing across multiple scales. His projects demonstrate thoughtful responses to context, climate, and community, while rethinking density and liveability. His influence extends beyond practice through advocacy roles, education, and policy engagement focused on housing quality.

“It’s an honour to be awarded alongside peers I know and respect,” says Freeman.

“This recognition is encouraging and supports continuing that work in the ACT, responding to affordability and supply while maintaining a strong emphasis on design quality.”

International — Hayden Federico, BSBG - Brewer Smith Brewer Group

Federico was commended for his leadership, design rigour, and global impact, particularly in establishing Buchan’s Dubai studio. The jury highlighted his adaptability, resilience, and ability to navigate complex international contexts while maintaining strong design outcomes and mentorship commitments.

“I’m honoured to receive this recognition,” Federico says. “I’ve always tried to pay that forward by supporting younger architects as they find their own path.”

New South Wales — Simon Rochowski, studioplusthree

As Founder of studioplusthree, Rochowski has built a practice centred on craftsmanship, sustainability, and contextual sensitivity. His contributions to the Institute, mentorship programs, and policy advocacy reflect a commitment to improving professional standards and supporting emerging architects.

“It’s a great honour to be named as the 2026 NSW Emerging Architect,” says Rochowski. “There are extraordinary people working in and alongside our profession.”

Queensland — Dominika Richards, Deicke Richards Architects

Richards was recognised for leadership in sustainability and advocacy, demonstrating how emerging architects can influence change within established practices. Her work spans community-focused, environmentally responsive projects and active engagement in climate and education initiatives.

“This recognition reflects not only on my efforts but also the collaboration and shared knowledge that defines our profession,” Richards says.

South Australia — Jasmine Placentino, Parabolica

Placentino was acknowledged for her material-driven design approach and leadership in advocacy and mentorship. Her work extends beyond projects to shaping discourse and fostering collaboration across the profession.

“I believe in a generous approach to practice – one that not only strengthens our profession but also extends its reach,” says Placentino.

Tasmania — Guy Edwards, BE-Architects

Edwards was recognised for combining design excellence with social responsibility. His work on Youth 2 Independence housing demonstrates architecture’s capacity to improve social outcomes, while his advocacy and mentoring contribute to broader professional development.

Victoria — Madeline Sewall, Up to Something

Sewall was honoured for her leadership in sustainable housing, public advocacy, and education. Her work promotes accessible, climate-conscious design while expanding public understanding of sustainability through media and open-source initiatives.

Sewall says she is thrilled and humbled “to be contributing to shared industry efforts towards tackling the climate crisis and housing crisis”.

Western Australia — Mike Sneyd, EKD Architects

Sneyd was recognised for his leadership in regional architecture, delivering culturally responsive and environmentally sustainable projects in northern Australia. His work integrates community collaboration, Indigenous engagement, and advocacy for equitable design standards.

Regarding Northern Territory, AIA has not selected a winner due to insufficient nominations this year.
