Woodlea, recently named Victoria’s Best Masterplanned Community, has officially opened Hazelwood Park, a nature-inspired space designed to spark creativity, connection, and inclusive play for families of all ages and abilities.

Surrounded by 12 hectares of protected River Red Gum trees and six hectares of wetlands, the park brings nature and storytelling together in every detail. Sculptural play pieces take cues from dragonflies and native bird nests, with splashes of bright Billy Button flowers dotted throughout.

It’s a place where all can let their imaginations run wild. But Hazelwood Park is more than just a fun day out. It’s been thoughtfully designed to grow with the local community.

With wide, pram- and wheelchair-friendly paths, elevated play structures, textured play elements and calming sensory areas, the park has something for every style of play – whether it’s quiet solo time or social games with friends. It’s just as welcoming for grandparents and carers too, with spaces designed to feel comfortable and inclusive.

“Hazelwood Park represents the next evolution in community-first design,” says Thomas Banham, Woodlea’s Landscape Manager.

“We’ve paired the beauty of the natural landscape with smart, inclusive infrastructure. This is a place that brings families together and grows with them over time.”

As part of that nature-first approach, the park features hundreds of native plants and wildflowers to help attract local wildlife. Already, the area is alive with cockatoos, bees, and even the occasional kangaroo, often seen hopping past in the early morning or late afternoon.

It’s not just a playground – it’s a chance to connect with the rhythms of the bush. Located just a short walk from the new Active Open Space precinct, Yarrabing Secondary School, and the Woodlea Hub – and close to future projects like an indoor sports centre, a community hub, and the upcoming Major Town Centre, Hazelwood Park is in the perfect spot for local families to live, learn and play.

As Woodlea celebrates a decade of building community, Project Director Matthew Dean says Hazelwood Park is a direct result of listening to residents.

“We consulted closely with our residents, and what they really wanted was a playground that felt like it belonged to everyone. A place where people, young and old, could not only play, but explore and stand together, sharing quality time,” Dean says.

“From the seesaws to the magic fairy doors hidden throughout the space, Hazelwood Park is designed to inspire curiosity. It’s a park where you can wander, imagine, and create moments - no matter your age or ability.”
