The winning proposal from a design competition to conceive a student housing tower and expand the UTS Broadway campus has won development approval.

The $427 million plan, designed by Nettleton Tribe with façade work by Lacoste and Stevenson, will bring 58,750 sqm of additional floor space to Broadway for educational, retail, cultural and sporting uses.

The approval also gives the green light to construction on a $70 million, 21-storey, student housing building.

This new residential tower will rise from the existing Building 6 podium, which will be extended to create new teaching, learning and social spaces.

The Harris Street façade will be made up of irregularly spaced windows of varying widths, interspersed with coloured, pre-cast concrete panels. A rooftop garden with stunning views of the city will cap the new building.

Planning minister, Tony Kelly, said controls on the development would maximise the role of UTS as an educational institution, while minimising its impact on surrounding areas.

“The university undertook a design competition for the Broadway building as part of its application, with the winning design incorporated into this plan,” Kelly said.

Kelly said the proposed demolition of the existing Bradshaw building will be allowed, following a thorough examination by the Department of Planning.

“The university has committed to an interpretation plan, including photographic archival recording, prior to demolition,” Kelly said.

The building is targeting a 5-Star multi-residential Green Star rating.
