Design renders for the new indoor sports facility in Moreton Bay, Queensland were unveiled recently, following the appointment of renowned architectural practice Populous as the Principal Architect for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games venue.

Planned as a major indoor venue for the Games, the Moreton Bay Indoor Sports Centre will feature 12 multi-use courts catering to sports such as basketball, netball, volleyball, futsal, pickleball and wheelchair rugby. With a Games-time capacity of up to 10,000 spectators, the facility is also designed to host major sporting events, entertainment, and community activities, serving the needs of the local residents as well as clubs and schools beyond 2032.

Located within the Moreton Bay Central precinct, the centre – to be designed by Populous’ Brisbane team – will include a café, athlete amenities, and outdoor green spaces, positioning it as a key social and recreational hub for the rapidly growing region. The design emphasises natural light and ventilation, drawing inspiration from the local landscape while integrating indoor and outdoor community spaces.

Populous brings significant experience to the project, with its Brisbane-based Asia-Pacific headquarters and a team of more than 100 architects and designers having delivered major Queensland projects including the Suncorp Stadium redevelopment, both the Cbus Super and People First Stadiums on the Gold Coast, the Queensland Tennis Centre, and training HQs for both the Brisbane Broncos and Brisbane Lions. Globally, the firm has designed venues for 14 Olympic and Paralympic Games including Sydney 2000, London 2012 and Paris 2024.

The project forms part of the $7.1 billion Games Venues Infrastructure Program, jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments, and delivered by the Games Independent Infrastructure and Coordination Authority (GIICA).

“GIICA is bringing the world’s best design talent to Queensland’s Games Venues Infrastructure Program to ensure every one of our 17 new and upgraded venues across the state fill their community, and all Queenslanders, with pride in 2032 and for generations to come,” says GIICA CEO Simon Crooks.

“Today’s announcement of Populous as the Principal Architect adds to the growing list of the multi-award-winning architecture teams bringing their expertise and imagination to our venues across the state.”

Populous Principal Brayden Goodwin, the project’s lead architect, observes that the design prioritises long-term community benefit.

“Moreton Bay is one of the fastest-growing regions in Queensland. As one of the largest facilities of its kind in South East Queensland, the new Centre will help address the increasing community demand for indoor sports facilities in the region and will be designed by Populous with legacy in mind,” Goodwin says.

The venue will be owned and operated by the City of Moreton Bay Council, which has already begun early site works. Construction is expected to commence in 2027, with completion targeted ahead of the 2032 Games. Engineering services will be provided by Aurecon and Northrop.
