The Victorian Government has revealed the designs for a $1.6 billion rail infrastructure project that will see every level rail crossing between Melbourne's Caulfield and Dandenong stations removed.

The project will be delivered by the Level Crossing Removal Authority who have been allocated $2.4 billion to remove at least 20 level crossing by 2018, with plans to remove a total of 50 level crossings by 2022.

This latest portion of the project will see nine level crossings removed at Grange Road and Koornang Road in Carnegie, Murrumbeena Road in Murrumbeena Poath Road in Hughesdale, Clayton Road and Centre Road in Clayton, and Corrigan Road, Heatherton Road and Chandler Road in Noble Park.

It will also see five new stations built at Carnegie, Murrumbeena, Hughesdale, Clayton and Noble Park, and upgraded signalling and power along the corridor.

Design centres on three sections of modern elevated rail will create 225,000sqm of community open space for new parks, playgrounds, sporting facilities, car parking and a range of other uses that will be chosen by locals.

Expert acoustic modelling shows the modern elevated designs will reduce rail noise at the street level and enable rail line construction work to continue with minimal distruption to rail services.

The project is being executed through active community consultation with more than 1,500 pieces of feedback informing the designs released recently. The next phase of consultation has begun, with the project team speaking to thousands of locals about the designs, and giving the community a say on how they want to use their new open space.

The Caulfield to Dandenong package will create more than 2,000 jobs and be delivered by a consortium including CPB Contractors and Lend Lease. Construction will begin this year, and be completed in 2018.
