The 2015 Red Dot Design Award: Product Design laureates have been announced, with 1,240 products awarded the ‘Red Dot’ seal of quality for good design.

These include Singaporean architectural firm WEIJENBERG for the design of its restaurant RAW, located in the culinary hub of Le Qun 3rd Road in Taipei.

Designed in collaboration with chef André Chiang of Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants, the restaurant reflects the visceral and primitive nature of its namesake ‘RAW’, and tells a parallel tale about how food can be experienced:

“Diners step into the eatery across a wooden path entering a tranquil lounge area which gently transitions customers away from the bustling streets of Taipei. A soft angled, organically sculptured wooden structure greets guests, and as they move into the main restaurant, this moves with them, merging to form the centre piece of RAW surrounding the centralized dining area.

“When at the dining area, customers are seated at tailor-made tables with lighting which creates a stage for the food, drawing customers in closer to the table and to each other creating an intimacy and peaceful haven.”

Victoria + Albert’s Amiata Collection, which was recently featured on Australia’s The Block Triple Threat as part of Josh and Charlotte’s winning ensuite design, also won a Red Dot Award for Product Design.

A total of 4,928 entries across 56 countries were received for the Red Dot Design Awards, but only 81 were bestowed the top honour – the Best of the Best award – including Philips’ LumiStreet Roadlight and Sony’s LSPX-W1 S4K ultra short laser projector and Xperia E3.

Honourable Mentions were also awarded to 122 products for a particularly well-executed aspect of design work.

This year’s jury comprises 38 design professionals from 25 countries, including new members such as Danish fashion designer David Andersen, German materials expert Dr Sascha Peters and CEO for the Taiwan Design Centre, Wen-long Chen. Together with experienced judges, they rated each entry according to functionality, degree of innovation, formal quality and ecological compatibility, amongst other criteria, across 31 categories.

Winners of the Red Dot Award: Product Design will be able to use the label as a marketing tool, with the Red Dot Design Museum Essen to exhibit their products for at least one year.

The award ceremony will take place on Monday, June 29 at the Aalto-Theater in Essen.
