Electrolux made their Sustainability Awards Category Sponsor debut in 2021. Returning in 2022, the appliance giant’s core ideals align with the awards, and is looking to enact groundbreaking change throughout all aspects of its business.
In a sustainability report released with Architecture & Design last year, Acting General Manager Derek Haley outlined the steps Electrolux is taking on their journey to ensure the company is environmentally conscious.
“As a Swedish company, sustainability has been an important part of the business globally for a long time,” he says.
Electrolux released their first Environmental Policy in 1995 and joined the UN Global Compact in 2003. Fast forward a couple decades, and the company is still looking to push on to be a leader in sustainable operations.
“We have reduced our carbon emissions by 70 percent since 2015, which is a huge achievement for us,” says Haley.
“We're currently in the process of rolling out a Zero Waste to Landfill programme in all of our factories locally. We will start at our Adelaide factory, which is powered by 7,500 solar panels. With the construction of our new six star energy rated facility in Ravenhall, Victoria, we will see a world leading factory where more than 80 percent of our own energy is generated on site.
“This will have us headed in the right direction of running all our operations on 100 percent renewable energy by 2030.”
The category Electrolux sponsors, the Multiple-Residential Dwelling, calls upon architects to submit the design of a new townhouse, duplex or residential complex that contains multiple residential dwellings. Projects nominated under this category must be classifiable as Class 2 or Class 3 buildings.
The design will demonstrate sustainable functionality and performance while servicing the needs of multiple residents, and will align itself with or expand upon best practice sustainability principles and demonstrate innovation in the way it approaches sustainable living, building and design. Ideally, the building will suggest a new direction in sustainability for our future cities by solving common sustainability challenges faced by industry and the broader public in the context of multi-residential.
The winner’s list of the Multiple Residential category will grow longer with the announcement of the winner at the 2022 Sustainability Awards Gala held at the Shangri-La in Sydney later this year. Submit your project here to put your best foot forward.
