Designed by Gray Puksand, the unexpected venue marks a continuation of the two-decade-long partnership between the practice and the institute.

In 2020, William Angliss Institute was given the unique opportunity to become the custodian of a decommissioned Melbourne W-class tram. Recognising its potential, the institute reimagined the historic vehicle as an urban, street-side café.

The adaptive reuse project blends heritage preservation with cutting-edge vocational training. Refurbished by Bendigo Tramways, the tram retains its familiar features, including its original conductor's bell and driver's equipment, and adds a modern interior tailored for coffee service and dining.

In addition, a minimalist, fixed overhead canopy protects the structure from the elements and provides a sheltered area for patrons.

Situated within the institute's north-facing courtyard along La Trobe Street, the café sits directly adjacent to the heritage-listed Food Trades School Building.

Positioned along a highly trafficked pedestrian route between Flagstaff Gardens and Southern Cross Station, it effectively breathes new life into the La Trobe Street streetscape, and serves as a visible, vibrant symbol of the institute's prominent role in contemporary hospitality education.

The William Angliss Institute Tram Café provides a live training ground where students gain hands-on operational, customer service, and barista experience, while contributing to Melbourne's vibrant coffee scene.
