Margaret River’s Wayfinder Wines has debuted its new cellar door, winery and restaurant in Cowaramup.

Designed by Kerry Hill Architects, the development has been conceived around environmental performance, low-intervention wine production and a farm-to-table food philosophy.

Drawing inspiration from the natural surroundings, and including a partially subterranean design, it continues the organisation’s commitment to sustainability through. Constructed within a turkey-nest dam wall, the building takes advantage of the earth’s natural insulation to assist with temperature control during the winemaking process.

In addition, as a means of reducing energy consumption, the winery employs a gravity-fed production system that allows grapes to be received at ground level before juice flows naturally to a series of 12 large concrete tanks below.

And finally, thanks to the inclusion of a comprehensive solar array allowing the winery is able to operate entirely off grid.

Architecturally, the building has been designed to blend into the surrounding landscape. An earth wall anchors the entry experience, while the roof has been planted with native grasses and shrubs to further integrate the structure into its environment.

The interiors echo this harmony with the land, featuring Australian timber, natural marble, and strategically placed skylights that flood the space with light.

Local Margaret River artists Alice Ford and Ollie Anderson are behind The Marris Mirror sculpture which features on the grounds, while inside, guests can expect pieces from Australian artists Lindy Lee, Tracy Gandimil Wanapuyngu, Emma Davies, Liliana Pasalic, Tjawina Porter, Kasper Raglus, Sylvaria Walker, and Ingrid Daniell.

“Our winery is designed to work with the landscape by being built directly into a turkey-nest dam. This provides natural temperature control and assists with our gravity-fed winemaking process which conserves energy to align with our sustainability focus at the winery,” says Wayfinder Head Winemaker Andrew Trio.

“It’ll be great to take guests into the winery to show how this process works and influences the final product they get to enjoy at the end of the tour.”
