The estate situated in the heart of the Quaternary terrace of Châteauneuf du Pape is known for its exceptional terroir, producing quality wine from this landscape.

Studio Méditerranée and Studio Mumbai's proposal for this extension roots itself in the idea of terroir, and is the deserving winner of the International Design category, sponsored by SAS International.

The Perrin family has been engaged and cultivated the land, producing wine through a bio-dynamic process for over 5 generations.

The family’s intention was to expand the existing winery and to provide for an infrastructure that would endure for future generations.

Tuned into the cyclical flux of the moon, the project harnesses materials found in the immediate environment.

The construction primarily made from the earth excavated, compressed and relocated in a balance of cut and fill, provides a volume of space for the wine cellars and a water cistern set into the earth.

The cistern collects water from the rain. Reservoir for the water used in the wine making process, it is also used as a passive mechanical device modulating the mistral air through the interiors in a process of passive cooling. This method allows for the spaces to maintain an optimum temperature and humidity for the maturing of wine.

Archetypal building materials such as brick, stone, lime, clay and earth are used in a manner, methods of making that allow for the quality of the building and its environment to be self-reliant and improve through time.

The initial brief was to extend and renovate the Château de Beaucastel winery to accommodate increasing production demands, while preserving the historic character and environmental context of the site.

The client sought a design that integrates seamlessly with the vineyard’s terroir and natural landscape, using locally sourced materials and sustainable construction methods.

Functional requirements included expanding cellar space, improving water management, and implementing passive cooling systems suited to the Mediterranean climate.

The project needed to ensure optimal conditions for wine maturation, including temperature and humidity control, while minimizing energy consumption. Additionally, the client wanted a design that supports long-term resilience, including water conservation, renewable energy integration, and reuse of materials from existing structures.

The brief emphasised a collaborative process, requiring the design team to engage closely with users and local workers to address seasonal needs and evolving operational requirements.

The overarching goal was to create a future-proof winery extension that respects tradition yet introduces innovative sustainable strategies.
