Announced last month, a number of built environment luminaries were rewarded for their contributions at the King’s Birthday 2023 Honours. 

Four architects were honoured for their “meritorious, distinguished and conspicuous services,” at the Honours ceremony. They were a small number of some 1,192 Australians who were celebrated for their work.

Peter Phillips (pictured) was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO), thanks to his work as a conservationist within the built environment. 

Serving on the board of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), Phillips has been a heritage and architecture consultant since 1997. 

Peter Phillips has been appointed an Officer (AO) of the Order of Australia for his distinguished service to heritage conservation to architecture and to professional organisations. He remains an Expert Member of the International Scientific Committee on Analysis and Restoration of Structures of Architectural Heritage, a role he has held since 2008.

Lindsay Johnson was appointed as a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for significant service to architectural building and design education. Johnson has previously held roles as the former Dean, Faculty of Architecture Building and Design at the University of Newcastle, as Chair of the National Environment Committee from at Roya Australian Institute of Architects, as well as being Chair of the National Education Committee from 1996 to 1999.

South Australia’s Mary Patricia Marsland was rewarded for her service to architecture, which has previously included being Chair of the South Australian Housing Trust, President of South Australian Chapter of Royal Australian Institute of Architects and Chair of the South Australian Heritage Council.

Simon Chan was the fourth architect honoured on the King’s Birthday, recognised for significant service to multiculturalism to the Indigenous community and to the arts. Currently the President of the Chinese Australian Forum New South Wales, he formerly presided over the Haymarket Chamber of Commerce and chaired the Aboriginal Benefits Foundation from 2015 to 2018.
