Western Australia based firm Dane Design Australia has taken out the overall Design Excellence Award at the 2012 Building Designers Australia WA event held on 20 October.

Dane Richardson has taken out the entire pool of design awards for new single residences in WA this year.

The house in Yallingup WA is located on a sloping hill less than 150m from the beach with ocean views to the west and north. The previous residence had to be demolished for the new build which left a site which is almost triangular in shape and set over 900 square metres.

Richardson who knows the client personally said that the brief for the project was quite open.

"I pushed through with many questions but the owner travels most of the year and was young without family so it was hard to pin down exactly what was required. The brief then developed to include a small pool, a lot of storage space, small home office, games room large enough for pool table and a large open fire place for ambiance."

The home has been formally certified to have a Six Star energy rating and utilises curved glass panels, internal timber panelled walls and soft concrete colours.

Richardson said there were a few considerations that the owner specified when designing the house.

"The master bathtub was positioned to have a commanding view of the clients favourite surf break. This was managed by loading our 3D model into Google Earth and tweaking the alignment of this particular window to the surf break. Another nice touch was to include a roof top deck; this is a small space sitting high on the concrete roof deck, fully exposed but an incredibly dramatic space for the old glass of wine."

The deck is covered by a large cantilevered circular louvered solar pergola which allows sun penetration into the upper level rooms in winter and shades the spaces below in summer.

Richardson had previously won a series of successive WA Design Excellence Awards in 2007, 2008 and 2009.

“Dane has demonstrated his signature versatility with the scope and scale of his entries in this year’s award series,” BDA WA chapter president Ian Ogborne said.

“His Design Excellence Award winning Yallingup project, in particular, is something quite special and I would not be surprised to see it emerge with national design excellence honours next year.”
