Two innovative spaces designed to improve liveability were honoured at the recent Australian Institute of Landscape Architecture (AILA) Victoria Awards 2015. The two projects included the revamped Royal Park in Melbourne, and a McGregor Coxall-designed master plan to conserve and promote the spectacular Shipwreck Coast along the Great Ocean Road.

Held recently at the Melbourne Town Hall, the event recognised the creators of 14 projects from 35 innovative entries, including civic playgrounds, urban plazas, foreshore works, memorial sites and national park master plans.

Chair of the Awards Jury, Anton James observed that the nominated projects attested to landscape architecture’s deepening engagement and growing influence in the questions shaping the environment. He added that the projects demonstrated the valuable contribution made by the profession to the Victorian quality of life.

McGregor Coxall received the 2015 Victoria Excellence in Landscape Architecture award for their bold and visionary plan to conserve, repair and champion 28 kilometres of the Great Ocean Road’s Shipwreck Coast. Designed to reposition the world-class landscape, the plan aims to provide rich and engaging visitor experiences to invigorate tourism in the area, while also protecting its natural and cultural assets.

Adam Nitschke won the prestigious 2015 AILA Victoria President’s Award for his role as Manager of Masterplanning at Parks Victoria. Adam has led projects such as the St Kilda foreshore promenade, Kinglake National Park master plan after the 2009 bushfires and the Shipwreck Coast master plan. Adam was also a guest speaker at AILA’s 2015 Festival of Landscape Architecture: This Public Life held in Melbourne from the 10th to 20th of October.

Return to Royal Park by City of Melbourne was also recognised for its beautifully integrated nature-based play space in a highly urbanised context. Located on the former Royal Children’s Hospital site, the re-established parkland offers new opportunities for children to test and explore their physical skills and imagination, while encouraging them to reconnect with nature and each other.
