The new headquarters for Federal Government's Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) has become the highest NABERS Energy Base Building rated development in the ACT, through energy efficiency alone, with a rating of 5.5 stars.

This recognition makes the building arguably the most ecologically sustainable commercial development in the ACT.

Walker Corporation completed the $280 million project at 50 Marcus Clarke Street.

State-of-the-art features of the building include ‘green walls’, a tri-generation energy plant, rainwater harvesting and a grey water recycling plant integrated into the building.

Work commenced on the DEEWR Headquarters building in 2007, with he developer delivering the 40,000sqm premises under time and budget, including the delivery of a $40 million fitout in the 6 Green Star premises.

The building was officially opened in mid-2010.

Matthew Clark, Acting Divisional Director Sustainability Programs at the Office of Environment and Heritage (National Administrator of NABERS).

50 Marcus Clarke is also managed by Walker. It is the cooperative energy management strategy between DEEWR , Walker (and the builder) which contributes to the outstanding NABERS results.

Walker Corporation General Manager of Development, David Gallant commented, “it is pleasing to achieve this level of recognition without purchasing Green Power to increase our rating. It is especially pleasing to achieve this result as one of the largest office buildings in the ACT.”

In 2011, the building received a High Commendation in the Property Council of Australia ACT Property Development of the Year awards.

Walker say they are working to improve upon their sustainability commitment with the new ATO Headquarters building in Melbourne with aspirations of achieving a 6 star NABERS rating.
