The first new distillery to be built in Sydney since 1853 has been named as the Best International Bar at the 2015 Restaurant & Bar Design Awards in London.

Designed by Acme & Co, the Archie Rose Distillery in Sydney’s Dunning Avenue trumped an international field of bar venues to claim the title, also beating other Australian projects along the way, including designs from Travis Walton Architecture, Bates Smart and Grant Amon Architects.

The project is one of adaptive reuse and involved the transformation of an unremarkable steel shed into a brand new drinking and education establishment. Acme & Co were given a tight budget and construction time of just 12 weeks so their material selection and detailing was chosen to be cost effective, easily sourced and sustainable.

“The project embraces an aesthetic based on fundamentals,” says the architects in their project submission for the 2015 National Architecture Awards.

“By adopting a material language referencing the beauty of the distillation process/equipment, the design imbues tactility, warmth and accessibility, enhancing its formal and conceptual simplicity.

“Existing structural elements and materials were reused and adapted, complementing robust new materials that will accrue attractive patinas. A series of sliding doors peel back to provide apertures within the existing corrugated steel facade. Natural light and ventilation penetrates the open plan production and bar zones decreasing the requirements for artificial conditioning.”

Australia was also successful within the International Category prizes. Sydney’s ACME restaurant by Luchetti Krelle (above) took out the Australia & Pacific Restaurant award and Melbourne’s Bond Lounge by Hachem (below) was the best in the Australia & Pacific Nightclub category.

Hachem founder and principal designer, Fady Hachem says he was humbled to receive the award.

“It is incredibly humbling to have been recognised on an international stage,” he notes.

“Bond was a great opportunity for me to explore ideas of ultra-luxurious escapism through high-end design.”
