The inaugural Asia Hotel Design Awards were announced on March 12 at the Parkroyal on Pickering Singapore, honouring the work of architects, designers and hotel operators in Asia and Australia.
Projects from Australia’s LAYAN DESIGN GROUP, Shed Architects and Dreamtime Australia Design were announced on the roll-call of 13 category winners which also included hotel designs from China, Singapore and Japan.
The program’s top honour, The Asia Hotel Design of the Year award, went to Australian-born LAYAN DESIGN GROUP for their PuYu Wuhan Hotel design in China. The 330 room five star boutique hotel also took out the Interior Design - Event Space (Conference, Banqueting & Meetings), the Architecture - Newbuild (urban) and the Interior Design - Lobby, Lounge & Public Areas category prizes.
Shed Architects were awarded the ‘Architecture - Historical Building’ category prize for their conversion of the ‘1888 Hotel’ in Sydney. The architects’ overt reference of the building’s history as a woolshed—including the restoration of its internal ironbark beams, pillars and period windows—obviously impressed the judges.
The Woods at the Four Seasons Hotel in Sydney took out the Interior Design - Cafe Bar or All Day Dining category and its designers, Dreamtime Australia Design were successful ahead of two Chinese, one Korean and one Thai project.
Commenting on this year’s award, Matt Turner, Editor-in-chief of Sleeper Magazine, said: “The criterion for success in these awards was based not only on creative excellence, but also on commercial viability. As well as projects that were aesthetically impressive, the judges looked for evidence that the designs would also meet the needs of client and customers alike. All the submissions were impressive and I am delighted to say that our winning entries were truly outstanding.”
