The shortlist for the 2021 Houses Awards, Australia’s premier awards program celebrating some of the most exceptional architecturally designed homes, has been revealed.

The Awards recognises and honours outstanding examples of residential architecture in Australia, and also provides a unique and intimate view of contemporary design across the country.

The projects in this year’s shortlist highlight the diversity of design, function, sustainability and innovation undertaken across the country, and showcase the extraordinary breadth of talent in the Australian architectural landscape.

Observing that the standard of residential design in Australia was evidently world class, Katelin Butler, chair of the 2021 Houses Awards Jury and editorial director at Architecture Media, commented, "This year, the jury was impressed by the many ways that extraordinary and clever architectural outcomes were created from ordinary materials or existing conditions.”

"Context and neighbourhood were pleasantly seen to be strong drivers of design, stitching the homes into their surroundings and giving something back to the public realm. There was also a strong emphasis on easy access to private outdoor space and how the home connects to these landscaped living spaces, determining how often these areas are used."

The winners of the 2021 Houses Awards across the nine categories will be announced on 30 July 2021, with one home receiving the top architectural honour of Australian House of the Year.

Each category offers a cash prize of $1,000, with the winner of the Australian House of the Year to receive $5,000.

The 2021 Houses Awards categories include Australian House of the Year, New House Under 200 Square Metres, New House Over 200 Square Metres, House Alteration and Addition Under 200 Square Metres, House Alteration and Addition Over 200 Square Metres, Apartment or Unit, Garden or Landscape, Sustainability, Emerging Architecture Practice, and House in a Heritage Context.
