Measuring value, not just waste

The industry has traditionally asked how much waste is diverted from landfill.

The more important question may be: how much value could we have prevented from being lost in the first place?

That means looking at material efficiency, procurement, reuse, recovery, labour productivity and whole-of-life value — not simply recycling rates.

The transition will require changes across the entire project lifecycle, from design and specification through procurement, construction, refurbishment and eventual deconstruction.
