Australia’s rooftop solar boom is transforming the nation’s housing stock into one of the world’s largest distributed energy networks, with more than 4.24 million solar systems[1] now installed across the country. As system sizes grow and installations become more complex, industry leaders are calling for greater focus on the products that support safe, durable integration between solar infrastructure and the roofs that carry it.

Australia’s rooftop solar fleet reached 27.57 GW[2] in 2025 – more capacity than the entire electricity generation of several developed nations. Household penetration now sits around 43%[3], the highest rate globally, with South Australia leading at 57-60%[4] of homes. Solar is also increasingly being paired with energy storage, with 183,245[5] home batteries purchased during the second half of 2025, and the Clean Energy Council reporting continued growth in average system sizes as households invest in greater energy independence and long‑term bill certainty. Rooftop solar has become one of the nation’s most valuable infrastructure assets, distributed across millions of households.

But its long‑term performance depends on the integrity of the roofs beneath it.

While panels and inverters remain the most visible elements of this transition, each installation introduces multiple roof penetrations for rail mounts, cables, conduit and junction boxes. These penetrations are emerging as a critical point of risk, particularly as average system sizes increase to 11 kW[6], creating more fixings and entry points that must remain watertight for decades.

Evo Building Products Director Peter Byrne said the scale of Australia’s solar rollout means the industry must now treat roof integration as a core part of solar infrastructure – not an afterthought.

“Australia’s roofs have effectively become part of the national energy grid,” Byrne said. “Every solar installation modifies a roof’s waterproofing system, and those penetrations need to be managed with the same care and long‑term thinking as the panels and inverters themselves.”

Industry inspection data shows that flashing faults are one of the leading causes of roof leaks[7] in Australian homes, with repair costs typically ranging from $150 to $900[8]. These failures often remain hidden until major rain events and can be exacerbated by Australia’s climate extremes – including intense UV exposure, short‑duration heavy rainfall and roof surface temperatures that can exceed 60-70°C.

Byrne said the combination of rapid solar growth and harsh environmental conditions is driving demand for installation products designed specifically for long‑term roof integration.

“Solar installers are electrical specialists, but they’re being asked to modify roofs at scale,” Byrne said. “Fit‑for‑purpose flashing and penetration products reduce workmanship variability and help ensure the roof remains watertight for the life of the system. We need to treat flashing as critical infrastructure, not a minor accessory.”

Australia’s installation standards already recognise the importance of these components. Solar Accreditation Australia’s Technical Requirements specify that where PV array cables and conduit pass through a tile or steel roof, a fit‑for‑purpose collar flashing must be installed. Equipment used at roof penetrations must also be designed to last for the life of the solar system.

As solar becomes a permanent feature of Australian housing, the industry is increasingly seeking flashing solutions designed for modern roof integration. Whether for solar cabling, conduit or other service penetrations, these connection points need to remain weatherproof throughout the life of the system.
