Lighting has an impact on moods, similar to the influence of colour in any environment.

The human brain translates light into stimulating messages for the nervous system; the intensity of light corresponds with the number of messages sent – a higher intensity therefore would make one feel more active. Conversely, lower light intensity will result in a calming effect.

Different light outputs are influenced by brightness measured in lumens, and colour temperature measured in kelvins (K). When the lumen output is low, the intensity of the light will be dimmer, but when the lumen output is high, the luminosity is increased. A lower kelvin measurement results in a 'warmer' light output producing yellow to red colours, while a higher kelvin measurement has a 'cooler' light output producing blue to white colours.

Some standard colour temperatures are 2700K or Golden; 3000K or Warm White; 4000K or Cool White; 5000K or Natural White; and +6000K or Daylight.

Various research studies have revealed the impact of lighting on the performance and well-being of employees at the workplace. If the lighting is too dark or too bright, staff mood, attention and performance can be negatively affected. Optimal lighting conditions are therefore recommended to enable workers to focus for a greater period of time.

Natural daylight is generally preferred over electric light, so creating an environment with similar lighting, could produce the best results.

Lighting design depends on the specific application or environment. For instance, restaurant lighting will generally use feature lights, wall lights and downlights with a softer, warmer feel. However, in an office building, brighter lights with a more daylight feel would be chosen.

Lighting design for the home – living room, study, kitchen or bedroom – should similarly be guided by specific considerations, especially the use of the room.
