One of the world’s most famous colours has been reimagined as Boundless Blue by the creative team at Haymes Paint as part of the iconic Australian made and owned paint brand’s celebration of 90 years of creative thinking, artistic expression and innovation.

A striking reinterpretation of the revered ultramarine blue, Boundless Blue was unveiled at the Melbourne Design Show last week, ahead of its exclusive, limited-edition release in July.

Boundless Blue has been developed using Haymes Paint’s pioneering ‘surface-localised pigment technology’ that concentrates a high load of genuine French ultramarine pigment on the surface of the paint. The result is each pigment particle’s direct interaction with light is maximised, producing an intense, luminous and vivid blue.

Haymes Paint’s Colour and Concept Lead, Rachel Lacy, led the development of Boundless Blue, inspired by the pigment’s rich legacy – from Renaissance artworks such as Michaelangelo’s Sistine Chapel masterpiece to famed French artist Yves Klein’s modernist interpretations.

“This is a colour with history, emotion and depth,” Lacy said. “By elevating the pigment to the surface, we’ve honoured ultramarine’s legacy while pushing its visual impact into new territory for designers and architects. Boundless Blue is a striking, unmissable colour that stands apart from any blend or imitation. It is also a celebration of Haymes Paint’s 90-year legacy and belief in colour’s power to shape space and experience.”

Boundless Blue was not intended for everyday application, she added, but rather to be experienced as a unique art piece in a small, carefully selected space. It was created for design professionals seeking originality, authenticity and artistry.

Coinciding with the launch of Boundless Blue is a limited-edition wallpaper design by Studio Garbett and hand-printed by artisan wallpaper craftsmen in Sydney. Designed to explore how the pigment behaves on textured surfaces, the wallpaper offers specifiers a tactile and decorative application of the colour in high-end residential and commercial settings.
