Baines Masonry Blocks invests in the latest technologies and innovations to ensure the structural integrity of buildings in the post-construction phase. In addition to the technology in these masonry blocks, there are several factors that need to be considered to achieve the best results, including order placement, storage, maintenance, and construction practices.

Water resistance

Baines Masonry’s Traditional Split Face and Smooth Face coloured dense weight blocks are manufactured using pre-sealing technology. The possibility of water penetration, efflorescence, mould, mildew and staining is reduced with the use of an innovative silicon-based admixture in the manufacturing process. Incorporated during the mixing process, this admixture promotes dispersion throughout the masonry blocks, forming an integral part of the product.

Also available as a mortar additive, the same admixture is highly recommended for controlling leaching of efflorescence, which will leave unsightly stains on the face of the masonry block. This additive is available for purchase from Baines Masonry.

Baines Masonry also offers a speciality post-application sealer SRW RWX, a water-based sealer specially developed to protect vertical masonry walls from damage caused by salt, road spray and pollution.

Colour

When placing an order for Baines Masonry blocks, make sure you order a sufficient number to complete the project at the same time, thereby avoiding the possibility of batch variations. Since the blocks are manufactured from natural aggregates that change in colour from time to time, ordering blocks from different batches can result in colour variations.

Onsite

Keep the blocks covered during inclement weather since masonry blocks should be dry during installation. Also ensure all unfinished walls are covered at the end of the day for protection from the elements.

If matching mortar colour with the block, use a colour oxide, white sand and white or off-white cement. Trial batches should be completely dry before assessing the colour match. Care should be taken to ensure every mortar batch is mixed to the same measured quantities to avoid mortar colour variation.

Cleaning

Keep the face of the blocks clean of mortar. Clean off mortar as work progresses and before it sets. Avoid cleaning down with acid. A guide to cleaning concrete masonry is available from the Concrete Masonry Association’s website.

Construction

Correct construction rules are contained in Australian Standard AS 3700, which covers such topics as the correct use of control joints, bond beams, joint reinforcement and mortar types.
