Setting up a construction site involves much more than buildings and equipment. From site security and access management to hydration, hygiene and first aid, the right products and services can help improve safety, support compliance and create a better experience for workers.

Here are eight essential considerations Ausco can provide when planning a construction site that is safe, compliant and focused on worker wellbeing.

1. Secure your site with temporary fencing

Construction sites must be secured from unauthorised access to protect workers, the public and valuable assets. Temporary fencing is a fundamental site requirement and an important part of meeting workplace health and safety obligations.

Look for fencing solutions that include options such as gates, handrails, engineered systems for high-wind areas, barbed wire and shade or promotional cloths. Having fencing delivered and installed as part of your site setup also helps ensure your compound is secure from day one.

Why it matters

Restricts unauthorised access
Enhances site security
Supports OH&S compliance
Creates clear site boundaries

2. Add site security cameras for 24/7 protection

Physical fencing is only one layer of protection. Security cameras provide continuous monitoring and can help deter theft, vandalism and unauthorised access.

Modern construction site camera systems offer 24/7 monitoring, 360-degree coverage, 4K video quality, motion detection, live viewing and app-based alerts. Some systems are solar-powered and WiFi-enabled, reducing infrastructure requirements while providing real-time oversight.

Why it matters

Protects plant, equipment and materials
Improves site visibility after hours
Provides incident evidence if required
Supports remote site management

3. Create safe access with covered walkways

Construction sites can quickly become hazardous during wet weather. Covered walkways help maintain safe movement between site offices, lunchrooms, amenities and work areas.

Modular covered walkways such as Coverflex® provide all-weather access, non-slip flooring, handrails and rapid installation. They also reduce slip, trip and fall risks while helping maintain productivity during adverse weather conditions.

Why it matters

Reduces slip and fall hazards
Protects workers from weather exposure
Improves site accessibility
Supports WHS objectives
Keeps the site tidy reducing mud and dirt

4. Minimise risk during building installation

Working at height remains one of the highest-risk activities on construction projects. When establishing temporary site compounds, selecting systems that reduce or eliminate work at height can significantly improve safety outcomes.

Ausco's SealSafe® roofing system links modular buildings together without requiring roof access during installation. The patented system removes the need for elevated work platforms, harness systems and many of the compliance challenges associated with working at height.

Why it matters

Reduces high-risk work activities
Improves installation safety
Accelerates project setup
Lowers compliance and permit requirements

5. Prioritise worker hydration

Worker wellbeing starts with meeting basic needs, and access to clean drinking water is non-negotiable on any construction site.

Water bubblers provide convenient access to chilled drinking water and bottle-filling stations. Solutions are available for sites supporting up to 80 workers, helping teams remain hydrated, alert and productive throughout the day.

Why it matters

Supports worker health and wellbeing
Helps reduce heat-related illness risks
Encourages hydration throughout shifts
Contributes to workforce productivity

6. Provide adequate first aid facilities

Every construction site needs a designated space to manage injuries, illnesses and emergency situations.

Portable first aid rooms offer a compliant and practical solution, complete with air conditioning, an examination table, running water, sink facilities and seating. Purpose-built facilities help organisations meet health and safety obligations while ensuring workers receive appropriate care when incidents occur.

Why it matters

Supports compliance requirements
Improves emergency response readiness
Provides privacy for treatment
Demonstrates commitment to worker welfare

7. Manage waste efficiently

Waste management is often overlooked during site planning, but it plays a critical role in maintaining hygiene, environmental standards and operational continuity.

Waste storage tanks with high-level alarms help manage liquid and solid waste without increasing the site's footprint. The alarm system provides advance warning before tanks reach capacity, helping avoid service interruptions and reducing the risk of site shutdowns due to waste management issues.

Why it matters

Maintains site hygiene
Prevents operational disruptions
Supports environmental compliance
Reduces downtime

8. Don't forget site comfort and amenities

Worker wellbeing extends beyond safety. Comfortable, functional site amenities can contribute significantly to morale, productivity and retention.

Furniture and supporting amenities such as seating, tables, kitchen facilities and hot water solutions help create comfortable lunchrooms, offices and first aid spaces. Features such as under-sink instant hot water systems can improve convenience while supporting safe workplace facilities.

Why it matters

Improves worker experience
Supports staff wellbeing
Creates professional site facilities
Enhances productivity and comfort

Final thoughts

A safe and compliant construction site requires a holistic approach that combines security, access control, worker amenities, safety infrastructure and operational efficiency. By incorporating solutions such as temporary fencing, security cameras, covered walkways, first aid rooms, hydration stations and waste management services, project managers can create a site environment that not only meets compliance requirements but also supports the wellbeing and productivity of every worker on site.
