Project overview

The Brisbane International Cruise Terminal (BICT), designed by Arkhefield, represents a new era in coastal architecture, blending innovative design with functionality. Situated at Luggage Point, this significant structure includes a 208-metre-long wharf and a 270-metre-long elevated walkway, equipping it to host the world’s largest cruise ships.

Design and materials

For this project, a pivotal aspect was the selection of durable and aesthetically pleasing materials capable of withstanding close coastal environments. UniCote® Coastal, known for its outstanding corrosion defence and advanced protective properties, was chosen for the roofing and features in cladding elements all around the build. The material's zinc/ aluminium/ magnesium alloy coating ensures longevity and structural integrity in the face of sea salt and environmental elements in the local area.

Economic and social impact

The BICT is not just an architectural feat; it's an economic catalyst expected to inject A$1.3 billion into Brisbane’s economy over the next 20 years. The terminal has created significant employment opportunities, with hundreds of jobs supported during its construction phase and many more in its operational phase.

Project highlights and challenges

The terminal was meticulously engineered to enhance passenger experiences from 'kerb to cabin' and includes extensive landscaping, parking, and public spaces designed to maximise usability and visitor satisfaction. Managing the complexities of a project of this scale, particularly in ensuring every component could withstand the coastal conditions, was a significant challenge.
