A popular green trend today, greenwalls are believed to have entered the Australian landscape when Mark Paul, former Horticulturist of the Year and founder of The Greenwall Company installed the very first greenwall in Australia 30 years ago.

Mark Paul is happy that his first greenwall continues to flourish but he also advises DIY gardeners that creating a greenwall is not as simple as planting a few potted plants on a wall. He explains that there is a science to it, which has evolved over the past 30 years and continues to do so.

Always admired for their beauty, greenwalls are installed on building facades for reasons that go beyond their aesthetic appeal.

As part of the 202020 Vision, The Greenwall Company is seeking opportunities to educate everyone from councillors to everyday homemakers of the true environmental and sustainable attributes of a greenwall project.

Greenwalls deliver several benefits to diverse environments: Greenwalls can be installed indoors or outdoors without limitations of dimensions and luminosity; offer countless creative possibilities to create unique installations; add to the biodiversity; facilitate thermal isolation of any surface, resulting in excellent energy savings; absorb pollutants and noise, greatly improving air quality and acoustics; and increase relative humidity and air oxygenation.

Additionally, greenwalls are structurally designed to prevent moisture contact, with the greenwall grown on an independent frame attached to the wall, and which can also be moved to a new location if required. Greenwalls contribute to the environment by reducing the greenhouse effect. They can also be completely automated to support perfect functioning of the drip reticulation system, minimising maintenance and water consumption.

The Greenwall Company’s most recent projects include the significant upgrade of the QANTAS First Class Lounge greenwall; the first greenwall in Barangaroo; and greening private balconies and adding interest to courtyards.
