The fire escape stairs at 100 Mount Street, North Sydney have been designed as an important architectural feature, meeting all safety regulations without compromising the architect’s vision for the building.

Arrow Metal manufactured perforated balustrade panels in mild steel to transform the fire stairs from functional to focal point at the tallest commercial building in North Sydney.

Designed to complement the building’s cross-braced, glazed exoskeleton facade, the glass-enclosed stairwell provides access to each office level of the 42,100-square-metre building. Fulfilling all safety regulations while achieving the aesthetic vision was a major challenge for the architects.

Perforated mild steel balustrade creates safe and stylish stairs

To create the balustrade for 100 Mount Street’s signature stairs, the Arrow Metal team perforated over 300 mild steel panels in pattern P246 – a classic in-stock round shape design featuring 9.5mm diameter holes in a staggered pitch with 40% open area.

Each perforated panel was individually designed and profiled by Arrow Metal’s expert team to fit its place on the stairwell. The pattern was carefully adjusted to ensure that the holes were always parallel to the panel edges for a uniform appearance. Selected panels were also folded for an exact pattern match and fit onsite.

Arrow Metal’s perforated panels were powdercoated by the customer after delivery to match the modern interiors of the prestigious 35-storey boutique building.

100 Mount Street

Standing out on the North Sydney CBD skyline, 100 Mount Street is a landmark commercial building housing tenants such as Laing O’ Rourke and NBN Co. Featuring a GBCA 5-Star Green Star design, the building has also achieved 5-Star NABERS rating.

The innovative building combines smart technology, connectivity and sustainable architecture with features including a chilled beam system to minimise energy consumption, a closed cavity facade with automated blinds and rainwater harvesting.
