Several green solutions from Junglefy were added to the International Departures terminal at Sydney Airport to integrate nature into the architecture of the urban airport environment.

Being a busy thoroughfare and featuring hard surfaces, the terminal needed biophilic design elements that would create a more pleasant and comfortable environment for travellers.

To meet Bayside Council’s brief for enhancing public amenity and reducing reflected heat, green walls and Junglefy Breathing Walls were added to create natural barriers. Planter boxes were combined with overhead green walls to create a lush backdrop while allowing space for trailing plants to fill the void. Complementing the walls, green facades were installed in unused areas to bring colour and vibrancy. Colourful bougainvilleas climb up wires to create an attractive display and a softened appearance.

Biophilic elements introduced in the terminal also address the focus on health and safety for public spaces by transforming the harsh urban setting into a pleasant experience for travellers. The improved aesthetic of the green walls relieves travel stress; being a natural acoustic barrier, they also reduce aircraft noise and create a more comfortable space.

The green walls are positioned to block the harsh sun and reflected heat from hard surfaces, while the Junglefy Breathing Walls filter air pollutants, creating clean air and reducing air pollution in the area.

Junglefy designed and constructed the green walls and Breathing Walls based on the custom requirements of the spaces throughout the airport.

Following the installation involving planting of thousands of plants, Junglefy’s skilled horticulturalists continue to carry out regular maintenance, check irrigation and systems, and ensure the plants remain in perfect health.

The Junglefy team installed 28 square metres of green walls and 58.5 square metres of Breathing Walls, and planted 3,460 plants across 28 species.
