A ripple-patterned perforated sheet metal facade created by Arrow Metal added a modern aesthetic to the new $4-million heated swimming pool at the Sunbury Leisure Centre.

A state-of-the-art therapeutic aqua exercise and rehabilitation facility in Sunbury, Victoria, the warm water pool was purpose-built by Hume Council to support local swimmers affected by injury, muscle strain and age-related mobility conditions.

The wave-themed perforated metal sheet facade in a contemporary charcoal grey finish features a custom architectural design by CO-OP Studio architects, which was achieved through Arrow Metal tooling. Each panel has a different perforation arrangement of 60mm, 70mm and 80mm hole sizes to produce the undulating effect.

Arrow Metal worked closely with project architect Kunal Matikiti and steel fabricators SA Steelworks to produce the striking design, supplying initial samples at an early stage for metal material and finish selection.

Long-length perforated panels were used in the project to achieve building coverage as well as deliver maximum privacy and light for users. While this was a major challenge, Arrow Metal’s ability to manufacture panels up to 5000mm in length allowed them to easily achieve the specified size of 4000mm x 1100mm, with no horizontal joins for a seamless, flowing pattern in keeping with the architect’s vision.

Each of the 44 panels in the installation also featured an easy-fix system of slots for the facade frame, ensuring fast and efficient fitting on site. The facade’s anodised charcoal grey finish – executed by Universal Anodisers – stands out stylishly against the building’s glass and brick exterior.
