Architecture and design practice TURNER recently hosted the latest edition of its networking initiative aimed at strengthening professional connections among women working across the built environment.

Now in its fourth year, the event brought together more than 35 professionals from architecture, design, development, project management and construction. Hosted by TURNER in partnership with Essence Project Management and McKenzie Group Consulting, the informal luncheon welcomed participants from sectors including residential, mixed-use and seniors living, with senior leaders encouraged to invite colleagues at different stages of their careers.

The initiative was created to provide an alternative to conventional networking events by encouraging open conversations and relationship building across different disciplines and experience levels.

“We structured this event in contrast to traditional ‘networking’ sessions dominated by long speeches,” says TURNER Business Development Manager Gemma Bainbrigge, who established the event. “This event creates space for attendees to engage in genuine conversations and to forge new relationships with women who understand what it’s really like to be a professional within the built environment.”

A former interior designer and business owner with more than two decades of industry experience, Bainbrigge now leads TURNER's business development activities.

“Building trust, listening deeply and celebrating each other’s wins – that’s the kind of networking we want to encourage at these events,” she adds.

Among the returning attendees was TURNER Experiential Design Lead Georgia Crawley, whose team delivers projects spanning wayfinding, public art and branding.

“This event opens doors for us to forge new connections across the industry,” Crawley says. “It’s good to hear about what other women are experiencing and to open your eyes to different aspects of the industry, that we may not be exposed to day to day.”

Discussions throughout the afternoon covered a broad range of topics, including career development, workplace challenges, leadership, and issues such as ageism. The emphasis was on creating authentic relationships and connections that continue beyond the event itself.

“After this event, it’s much easier to grow these connections when next you meet on site, at another event or even online,” Crawley notes. “As women working in this industry, we have a lot of similar experiences to share and that can be very comforting.”

“It’s a really enjoyable afternoon where you’ll feel supported by a room full of people who truly understand you. We’re all pushing to be the best we can be in our roles, and this event gives us the opportunity to help each other along the way,” she concludes.
