Influential architect, educator and founding partner of Allen Jack + Cottier Architects, now AJC Architects, Russell Callam Jack passed away on Friday 15th August 2025, aged 100 years, leaving behind a rich legacy of impactful design, award-winning work, and significant contributions to architectural education.

Interested in architecture from a young age, Jack honed his skills in building construction and freehand drawing even during his service in the Royal Australian Air Force. He was a contemporary of John Allen at Sydney Technical College, both working part-time for Rudder, Littlemore & Rudder while completing their studies.

Following graduation, Jack won numerous prizes, including the prestigious Byera Hadley Travelling Scholarship. He moved to London in May 1952, joining Tripe & Wakeham Architecture to work on several projects including a harem for the Kuwait royal family, while his journeys across Europe gave him informed insights about urban design.

On his return to Australia, Jack worked with Rudder, Littlemore & Rudder briefly before partnering with his collegemate Allen in 1956 to establish their firm, John Allen and Russell C. Jack. Keith Cottier, who had joined the practice as a student in 1957, became the third partner in 1965, with the firm now called Allen Jack + Cottier.

Among his notable recognitions was the RAIA Sir John Sulman Medal that he received in 1958 for designing his own house in Wahroonga, Sydney.

Following his retirement from the firm in 1976, he began teaching design at the University of New South Wales, joining the Architectural Faculty full-time as Senior Lecturer. He also resumed his educational journey, gaining his M.Arch in 1980 and continued as a visiting professor until 1990.

“Russell’s vision and expertise were foundational to the establishment and growth of AJC, and his influence can be seen throughout Sydney’s built environment. His legacy continues to inspire all of us at AJC,” says the firm in a special release.

To honour Jack’s immense contribution to architecture and celebrate his life, AJC will host an event later this year, bringing together colleagues, friends, and the architectural community to reflect on his enduring impact.
