Design practice OCULUS has appointed architect Jess Austin as Associate Director, strengthening the studio’s architectural capabilities and expanding its established expertise across landscape architecture and urban design.

Austin brings almost 20 years of international experience encompassing award-winning architecture, urban design and public realm projects across Australia, the United States, the United Kingdom and Europe. In his new role, he will lead OCULUS’ architectural offering, bringing a design-focused approach that complements the practice’s expertise.

His professional portfolio encompasses civic and cultural projects, with his experience covering the full project lifecycle from strategic masterplanning and concept development through to technical design and construction.

Austin has also worked alongside several internationally recognised practices including DS+R, Grimshaw and Woods Bagot, contributing to major projects such as the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) renovation in New York, the Tarrkarri – Centre for First Nations Cultures in Adelaide and Columbia Business School in New York.

His approach centres on creating projects that deliver lasting public value, combining design excellence with technical rigour and a deep understanding of project delivery, while building trusted relationships with clients and meeting their aspirations.

Austin joins fellow Associate Directors Claire Martin, Keith Stead, Roger Jasprizza and Peta Miskovich, working alongside OCULUS Director Bob Earl.

The appointment forms part of OCULUS’ broader focus on cross-disciplinary design excellence, as the practice continues to nurture stronger relationships with industry partners.

“I’ve watched OCULUS’ work up close for several years and I know the level of professionalism and curiosity they bring to every project they’re involved with. I couldn’t be happier to join the team and bring my experience and skills to the work they do,” says Austin.

“I look forward to delivering groundbreaking, sustainable and inclusive places with OCULUS’ creative team of landscape architects, architects and urban designers.”
