Architectus has promoted Sydney-based designer Janine Graves to Principal, reinforcing the practice's commitment to critical infrastructure design and recognising her contribution to the rapid expansion of its national data centre portfolio.

Since joining Architectus as Associate Principal in late 2025, Graves has played a key role in establishing the practice's presence within the increasingly significant data centre design sector across Australia.

With more than 20 years of experience spanning Australia and the United Kingdom, Graves has developed specialist expertise in the design and delivery of complex, secure environments.

“Much of my work happens at the front end of projects, making sure we get the stakeholder engagement and planning right – the schematics, the operations, the security,” she says. “Understanding what our clients and their end users really need is what ultimately drives robust, future-ready design.”

While data centres have become a major focus of her recent work, including precinct-scale developments exceeding one gigawatt in capacity, Graves views these projects within a much broader critical infrastructure context.

“We’ve grown exponentially in the design and delivery of data centres in Australia, and Architectus is forging a path of innovation and sustainability in this typology,” she notes. “But this is just one piece of the wider infrastructure jigsaw. Architectus has specialist expertise designing ‘mission critical’ buildings, including quantum computing facilities, advanced manufacturing and industrial developments, car parks and emergency infrastructure – projects that require careful planning and innovative thinking to achieve efficiency and productivity.”

Emphasising the importance of cross-sector collaboration, Graves says, “Data centres can no longer be considered in isolation; they must respond to their context and be acceptable to our communities. Our collaboration with Architectus’ Urban Futures and Interior Design teams is so important to creating environments that are conducive to that broader context, while also supporting the people who occupy and operate them around the clock.”

Graves' promotion positions Architectus to further expand its capabilities in designing the next generation of mission-critical facilities that support clients, communities and the broader economy.
