Government agency NATSPEC has announced the winners of its 2022 NATSPEC Student Prize, which showcases the work of Master of Architecture students across the country.

The University of Melbourne’s Mitchell Pianto received a High Commendation for his submission ‘What a Waste’ (pictured). The judges were impressed by its ambition and novelty.

The design was for a proposed modular recycling containment system that aims to help tackle the growing concern of Australia's massive waste generation from its suburban style residential construction boom. Which aims at collecting materials from bricks and tiles to timber and paint.

“The aims of the competition to seek out innovation and address sustainability issues in the construction industry were admirably addressed by the unconventional proposal with its ambitious approach and clear-sighted strategy,” a statement from the Judging Panel reads.

‘The Flow House’ submitted by Stephanie Lade of University of Notre Dame and a team submission from Curtin University students Bony Babu George, Anjali Mohan and Bright Ernest Esim, titled ‘Adaptive Modular Envelope’, were both awarded Commendations.

The 2022 Judging Panel includes Anthony Burke, Kathlyn Loseby, Rebecca Moore and Tony Kemeny. The Panel says that while the Highly Commended submission was a topical and inventive proposal, future participants need to exceed the 2022 recipient.
