COX Architecture has appointed Mitchell as Director in its Brisbane studio, recognising more than twenty years of deliberate commitment to a practice she joined as a newly graduated designer in 2004. Her elevation to the directorship is both a professional recognition and a signal of the studio’s investment in the culture of loyalty and depth that, at COX, is understood as a form of leadership in itself.

Mitchell has built her career across Brisbane’s public and private sectors, with a specialism in workplace strategy that has drawn in clients including Australian Retirement Trust, Brisbane City Council, the Australian Taxation Office, Rio Tinto, Transurban and Knight Frank. Her approach to workplace design centres on aligning people, place and organisational purpose, with a particular emphasis on designing fitouts intended to outlast the tenure of the tenant that commissioned them. That long-term thinking, applied consistently across two decades of major projects in Queensland, has established Mitchell as one of the studio’s most trusted practitioners in the discipline.

“Few milestones are as rewarding as welcoming someone who has grown with the practice into our partnership,” says Richard Coulson, Director and Chair of the Board, COX. “Michelle joined COX early into her career and has built an outstanding career over more than two decades. Her appointment reflects her professional excellence and the trust, generosity and leadership she brings to our teams every day.”

Mitchell’s influence within the practice extends well beyond her own project list. She sits on COX’s Design Pillar and contributes to national interior design initiatives, and her leadership within the broader profession is well established: in 2025 she moderated the Design Talk at COX’s AGM in Tocal alongside Philip Cox and John Richardson, and led the Interior Jury for the Australian Institute of Architects (AIA) Brisbane Regional Awards. Her expertise has also been sought across studio boundaries, with contributions to projects and bids in Perth, Adelaide, Sydney and Melbourne.

For Mitchell, the decision to invest in a single practice was always intentional.

“I made a deliberate decision to build my career at COX because of the diversity of projects, our commitment to design excellence and its genuinely democratic culture,” she says. “Throughout that journey, I’ve been fortunate to learn from exceptional mentors, collaborate with talented colleagues and build lasting relationships with clients.”

Her reflection on the directorship draws the same thread through. “This milestone is a reminder that great work is never achieved alone. It reflects the people, opportunities and shared values that have shaped my journey: embracing diverse perspectives, leading with empathy and creating places that deliver lasting value. I’m proud of what we have achieved together and excited to continue supporting and growing the talented team that will shape COX’s future,” Mitchell adds.
