Sydney’s John McAslan + Partners has announced two promotions and a senior hire, marking a period of growth for the internationally recognised architecture firm as it settles into a larger studio in Surry Hills.

Ryan Wazir has been elevated to Associate Director. Martin Fox joins the practice as Senior Associate. James Coakley has been promoted to Associate.

“Ryan and James’ promotions recognise their contribution to the practice through their work on projects in Australia and internationally,” says director and Sydney studio lead Troy Uleman. “With Martin joining the team we have strengthened our senior management as we build local capacity and capability.”

Ryan Wazir — Associate Director

Ryan Wazir is an architect working across major public, cultural and community projects, with design expertise in urban renewal, adaptive reuse and heritage. He contributes to the profession through research, teaching and jury roles, is a Byera Hadley Travelling Scholarship recipient, and authored Re-Imagining Mosques: The Intersection of Inclusive Architecture and Urban Design. He was also a 2026 Summer Fellow in Architecture at the State Library of NSW.

“Ryan has a strong interest in places of worship and heritage and is driving new business in these sectors locally, backed by our strong global portfolio of related projects,” says Uleman.

Martin Fox — Senior Associate

Martin Fox brings specialist expertise in the transport and commercial sectors, having worked at several renowned firms in Australia and the UK. His project experience includes the Barangaroo Towers, London’s BBC Headquarters, build-to-rent developments and multiple Sydney Metro projects. He is currently part of the Sydney Metro West team.

“Martin will support our clients on city-making transport infrastructure and precincts while bringing valuable expertise in other sectors,” says Uleman.

James Coakley — Associate

James Coakley joined John McAslan + Partners in 2023 and brings significant experience across complex, large-scale residential, mixed-use, civic and masterplanning projects. He is currently delivering several major projects within King Salman Park in Riyadh, alongside education and transport projects in Sydney.

Uleman congratulates Coakley on his promotion, noting that clients benefit from the global perspectives he and the wider practice bring to projects.

A new studio in Surry Hills

The appointments coincide with the practice’s move to a larger office in Buckingham Street, Surry Hills — within the same building as the previous space, but with a footprint to match the studio’s growing ambitions.

John McAslan + Partners is an internationally renowned architecture firm with a global portfolio spanning transport infrastructure, culture, education, mixed-use, worship and landscape. The practice has received more than 200 global awards for design excellence. Recently recognised projects include the Sydney Central Metro Upgrade and Sydney Metro Waterloo Station, the Sloane Street masterplan and landscape in London, and Belfast Central Station in Northern Ireland.
