Sydney-based international architecture and design practice Koichi Takada Architects (KTA) has appointed James Perry as Director to lead the Brisbane studio as the firm expands its presence across Queensland and internationally.

Perry brings more than 25 years of architectural experience to the leadership role, with a portfolio spanning award-winning mixed-use, cultural, civic and educational projects in Australia and overseas. Born and raised in Zimbabwe, he spent many years in Sydney before relocating to Brisbane.

Perry was previously a Principal at FJC Studio, where he played a key role in delivering several high-profile projects including commercial developments such as 77 Market Street and UTS Central, as well as major cultural works like the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery Redevelopment and the Warships Pavilion. His broader body of work also encompasses residential, university and cultural projects across multiple contexts.

The appointment marks a continuation of Perry’s longstanding professional relationship with KTA Founder and Principal Koichi Takada. Beginning in the late 1990s at PTW Architects, where they established a strong alignment in design ethos and conceptual process, their collaboration later extended to international projects, including a competition-winning design in Japan, laying the groundwork for mutual respect and shared architectural vision.

In his new role, Perry will lead the Brisbane team, overseeing design direction and providing strategic guidance across several significant projects. He will work closely with KTA’s Sydney studio and global teams to support the practice’s expanding portfolio.

Alongside his professional practice, Perry has made a sustained contribution to architectural education and discourse in Australia. He has led undergraduate and postgraduate design studios at the University of Technology Sydney, where his teaching has explored design innovation, architecture in the landscape and creative processes.

Perry’s appointment follows continued momentum for Koichi Takada Architects in Queensland, building on the success of projects such as Upper House in Brisbane and Norfolk in Burleigh Heads, alongside several residential and mixed-use developments currently in progress.
