CplusC Architects + Builders is planning for its next stage of growth and direction following the mid-February departure of Director and Senior Project Architect Hayden Co’burn, who is moving into teaching and further academic study at University.

Acknowledging Co’burn’s contribution to the practice, CplusC Managing Director and Principal Architect Clinton Cole says, “Those kids are very lucky. Hayden’s an incredible communicator and teacher and he brings soul every day of the week. He’s been my rock on the architectural side, complementing Nathan Krstevski’s leadership on the construction side.”

“It goes without saying that he’ll be missed – and that his next chapter will be just as stellar,” he adds.

Over a period of eight years at the award-winning practice, Co’burn has contributed to a series of environmentally focused residential projects across Sydney, including homes recognised for pushing sustainable design boundaries. One of the projects, the Holocene House, was the first in Australia to be certified by the international Active House Alliance.

“It’s inspiring to create homes that push the envelope – and that stand for life. I’m stoked to have been part of the CplusC story, and I know the firm will go from strength to strength,” says Co’burn who has played a key role in driving the firm’s bold and holistic approach to design and construction.

As comfortable problem-solving onsite with CplusC’s construction team as presenting to clients at its Surry Hills HQ, he helped refine the company’s integrated architect-builder business model, while leading its technology implementation, and revolutionising how projects come to life through digital media.

The leadership transition comes as the 13-person studio continues to evolve and grow and is looking to strengthen its position in sustainable design and heritage conservation across Australia and internationally.

Replacing Co’burn will be tough, observes Cole, who founded CplusC more than 20 years ago.

“Few architecturally trained professionals are a fit for a multidisciplinary team like ours, which centres collaboration between architects and builders,” Cole says. “We’re all about being onsite, drawing on everyone’s expertise to come up with inventive ways to solve technical challenges. And we’re allergic to greenwashing. So, we’ll take our time to find the right person to fill his shoes.”
