Jeffery Copolov will retire from his role as Director at Bates Smart on 1 July, bringing to a close a distinguished 40-year chapter that helped shape the renowned architecture practice’s interior design offering and influence the broader Australian design industry.

Widely recognised for a design approach characterised by his classically modern and timeless style as well as attention to detail, Copolov has played a significant role in shaping some of Australia’s residential, commercial and hospitality environments. His portfolio also extends across retail, healthcare, education and workplace projects, while his longstanding relationships with major clients have spanned decades.

Copolov's journey into design began at RMIT University, where he studied interior design before entering the world of television set design. He joined Bates Smart during the 1980s, at a time when interior design was still emerging as a recognised discipline within the building industry. Over the following decades, he became a leading advocate for integrating architecture and interiors during project development to help deliver a holistic outcome.

His work earned widespread industry recognition. Among numerous accolades, he was named IDEA’s Designer of the Year in 2010, awarded the IDEA Gold Medal in 2013, and inducted into the Design Institute of Australia’s Hall of Fame in 2018.

Copolov was appointed Director at Bates Smart in 1995, becoming the first interior designer in the firm's 140-year history to hold the position. During his tenure, he has witnessed significant growth within the practice, including the establishment of the Sydney and Brisbane studios. He leaves the interior design team in very experienced hands: Melbourne-based interior designer and Director, Mark Healey, has been with the practice for 20+ years, while Directors Brenton Smith and Kellie Payne have been leading interior design in Sydney for over 15 years.

Even as he steps down from the leadership role, Copolov will remain involved with the practice as a consultant, assisting with ongoing projects and supporting a transition to the next generation of design leaders.

“I’m incredibly honoured to have been able to contribute to the legacy of the extraordinary practice that is Bates Smart, and to create cities and spaces that improve people’s lives,” he says.

“I’ve been blessed to have had a career surrounded by like-minded, creative and caring individuals and I hope that I have contributed to raising the overall quality, importance and deep thought behind interiors within the property industry.”

Bates Smart acknowledges Copolov’s decades of contribution, recognising his commitment and passion for design and project outcomes, along with countless design awards.

“Jeff’s most cherished project is generally his most recent commission when he is highly motivated and excited by a fresh new challenge – we trust this next chapter will live up to his high expectations,” the firm adds.
