UTS Gallery is hosting a new exhibition about contemporary research outside the studio and a symposium about architecture inside the gallery.

Opening on 8 March, Fieldwork, the architecture research exhibition curated by Sarah Hearne brings together the work of six architectural practitioners working locally and internationally: First Office, Besler & Sons, Tomorrow’s Thoughts Today, Archive of Affinities, Cooking Sections, and Fake Industries.

Andrew Atwood and Anna Neimark of LA firm First Office, which was a 2016 finalist for the Museum of Modern Art and MOMA PS1 Young Architects Program have been commissioned to produce a new wall work that will reinterpret surveyed data points in a palette of standardised shades.

London duo Cooking Sections will present their performative work Today We Are Green, which considers the impact of the commodities trade at a local level. First presented by The Delfina Foundation, the exhibit is a fountain that distributes either rum or bio-ethanol depending on the fluctuating price of oil on the global stock market.

The Indo Pacific Atlas by Fake Industries is a ten-metre long diorama created in collaboration with UTS Masters of Research students for the inaugural Chicago Architecture Biennial in 2015. Comprising of 4000 images taken on research trips in cities across the region, the diorama was conceptualised in response to the centring of Australia within the Indo Pacific Region.

A symposium is also being organised on the topic of architecture within the gallery space. The symposium will open up the exhibition itself as a case study of contemporary works that merge installation, curatorial and architectural practice. Highlights of the two-day event include a keynote address by internationally renowned art and architectural historian and curator Sylvia Lavin, followed by a day of presentations and discussions with the exhibited practitioners.

Fieldwork curator Sarah Hearne is a lecturer in History and Theory at University of Technology Sydney. She has curatorial experience as an assistant curator and catalogue editor for the exhibition series, Everything Loose Will Land curated by Sylvia Lavin, The Artless Drawing: Neil Denari at ACE Gallery.

Fieldwork is presented in partnership with UTS Architecture and the Centre for Contemporary Design Practices, as part of Art Month Sydney.
