A new urban centre is evolving rapidly in The Hills Shire, driven primarily by large-scale residential development in the area, following the opening of the new Sydney Northwest Metro Line, which now enables faster commutes into Sydney’s CBD.

The NSW Government’s 2023 decision to lift the dwelling cap in the Hills Showground Metro Station Precinct from 5,000 to 9,000 homes has accelerated development activity, with thousands of apartments now in planning across Castle Hill.

At the heart of this emerging urban hub is Deicorp’s Showground Village, designed by award-winning architecture firm TURNER, with the project being the first in the rapidly expanding precinct to seamlessly combine residential, retail, medical, and commercial offerings. While the retail centre is already open, 430 apartments are scheduled for release by the end of this year.

“This is a brand new neighbourhood that will gradually grow with thousands of new residents, and they will all need access to the facilities that support people in their day-to-day lives,” says Shewanna Mendis, Director at TURNER. “They need more substantial amenities than some tasty food and beverage outlets or a lovely coffee shop on the street level of their apartment tower.”

While easy access to transport and retail is essential when designing facilities to support communities, Mendis says people also need to access childcare, doctors, pharmacies and other ancillary medical services in close proximity to their home. “These facilities will be available in the Showground Village and are the key to the success of the entire precinct and the community that will evolve around it.”

“This is important because, as the first part of the precinct to be completed and with its prime central location, this project will lay the groundwork for what follows afterwards,” she adds.

The four residential towers above the retail centre at Showground Village will feature generously designed apartments, along with family-friendly on-site amenities, landscape elements, public artworks, and community-focused spaces. Each of the four buildings has its own unique character and style while contributing to a cohesive architectural identity.

“TURNER’s diverse design philosophy means that designing for communities is a core part of our practice,” informs Mendis.
