A once-derelict timber wharf on Sydney Harbour has joined some of the world’s most celebrated urban landmarks, becoming the first Australian project to receive the Urban Land Institute’s Asia Pacific Legacy Award.

Woolloomooloo Wharf, a 400-metre stretch of heritage timber piles, boardwalks, and restaurants, now sits alongside New York’s Rockefeller Centre and Hong Kong’s Pacific Place on the ULI list honouring places that continue to deliver civic, cultural, and economic value decades after they were built.

Constructed between 1910 and 1915, the wharf was at one time the largest timber finger wharf on the planet. It served as a hub of Australia’s wool trade, a wartime staging ground, and a gateway for thousands of post-war migrants.

By the 1970s, as shipping moved to containers and port activity shifted elsewhere, the structure fell into disrepair and was marked for demolition.

Its future changed in 1996, when developer Lang Walker and Walker Corporation bought the site. The company undertook a $400-million restoration that reopened just in time for the Sydney 2000 Olympics, transforming the vacant pier into a waterfront precinct of apartments, restaurants, and public space.

David Gallant, Walker’s managing director and chief executive, said the project helped rewrite expectations for industrial heritage.

“Demolition was considered the easiest solution,” Gallant says.

“Lang Walker led one of the most significant heritage restorations in the country and created a waterfront community that is still thriving more than 25 years later.”

Gallant says the award honours Walker, who died in 2023, and a philosophy that has since shaped other precincts, including King Street Wharf, Parramatta Square and Maroochydore City Centre.

Preservation advocates say the rescue of Woolloomooloo remains a “turning point”.

“Woolloomooloo Wharf is one of the finest examples of early twentieth-century wharf engineering in the world,” says Stephen Davies, former director of the National Trust NSW.

He says its machinery — conveyors, electric lifts, gantries, and Federation-style sheds — reflect a level of craftsmanship that can no longer be replicated.

Davies also says the wharf’s demolition would have erased “irreplaceable chapters” of Australia’s wartime and immigration history.

The overhaul included a 100-year maintenance plan and replacement of the original timber piles with reinforced concrete. The site was added to the NSW State Heritage Register in 2000.

Today, the wharf is home to more than 300 apartments, a hotel, marina, and a line-up of restaurants that draw a steady stream of locals and tourists. Among them is China Doll, where long lunches by the harbour have become part of the restaurant’s identity.

“People feel a real connection to this place,” says general manager Solange Cech.

“There is nowhere else in Sydney where heritage, water, the energy of the boardwalk and world-class dining come together like this.”

The precinct now attracts millions of visitors each year and is a reminder that a century-old timber pier, once destined for the wrecking ball, is still shaping Sydney’s waterfront story.
