Architecture firms Bates Smart, SAA Architects, John McAslan + Partners, Neeson Murcutt Neille, Stewart Architecture and Aileen Sage Architects have been appointed to design five of Sydney Metro West's new stations, as the first detailed renders of the project are unveiled and construction mobilises across key sites.

The stations at Westmead, North Strathfield, Burwood North, Five Dock and The Bays will be delivered by a joint venture led by Gamuda, with Laing O'Rourke and DT Infrastructure. Early works have begun at North Strathfield, Burwood North, Five Dock and The Bays this month, with major station construction due to commence by the end of the year. Design with Country input was provided by Djinjama, with landscape architecture by TCL.

Sydney Metro: a decade of transformation

Sydney Metro West is the latest and most ambitious chapter in Sydney's rapid metro expansion. The city's first metro line, Sydney Metro Northwest, opened in 2019, running from Tallawong to Chatswood. Sydney Metro City and Southwest followed in 2024, extending the network from Chatswood through the CBD and on to Bankstown. Together, those two lines represented the largest public transport investment in Australian history at the time of their opening.

Sydney Metro West builds on that foundation, extending the network 24 kilometres from Westmead and Parramatta through the inner west and into the CBD. It is the first time the metro network reaches Sydney Olympic Park, Five Dock, Burwood North and The Bays precinct — areas experiencing significant urban renewal and population growth. The project is expected to double rail capacity between Parramatta and the Sydney CBD.

Station design approach

All nine stations on the line are intended to respond to their individual neighbourhoods, creating what the project describes as welcoming, people-focused transport hubs that support connectivity and future growth. Final designs for each station will be confirmed following a detailed design process expected to conclude in early 2027.

The flagship Hunter Street station in the Sydney CBD will be designed and constructed by a joint venture of Lendlease, Mirvac and Coombes Property Group, with works set to begin later this year once cavern excavation is complete.

Remaining contracts and project timeline

Contracts for the remaining stations at Parramatta, Sydney Olympic Park and Pyrmont are expected to be announced by the end of 2026. Sydney Metro West has a target opening date of 2032, at which point it will connect Parramatta and the Sydney CBD in approximately 20 minutes.

The project forms part of a broader state government vision for transit-oriented development across western and inner Sydney, with each station precinct expected to support new housing, commercial and community uses in the years following the line's opening.
